Each spring matches between stallions and the farm's broodmares captures the full attention of many horse breeders. Fabulous magazine layouts, production and performance records, and horse show buzz tout the reputation and pedigree of current and past champions.
 

An important question is just how much can a stallion influence the outcome of any given match? Modern genetic studies bring to light just how important the mare line is due to the transmission of the X chromosome. The stallion can only pass on one X chromosomewhich comes from his dam to his fillies and none to his colts while the mare passes on one of her X chromosomes to every foal. Our conclusion is that the mare in a pedigree is of equal importance to the stallion.

Watchman looks at genetic potential in three places: the sire line, the sire's dam line, and the mare's dam line. The Y chromosome always comes from the sire; the X chromosome(s) comes from the sire's dam and/or the dam depending on the sex of the foal.
